Jackson Street Reconstruction

Jackson Street between Maryland and Arlington Avenues will be reconstructed in 2026. Pedestrian amenities will be added to Jackson Street between Arlington Avenue and Wheelock Parkway. 

The project will include installing a trail and sidewalk along Jackson to establish a connection between the Trout Brook Regional Trail segments, replace two aging bridges within the corridor and reconstruct Jackson Street.

Goals

  • Improve pedestrian and bicycle mobility and access by adding trail and sidewalk.
  • Improve infrastructure safety by replacing two aging bridges.
  • Improve traffic safety by reconstructing and reconfiguring street.

Timeline

July 

  • Maryland Avenue Intersection  
    • July 20, following the completion of utility relocations, the south half of the Maryland Avenue intersection to Rose Avenue will close. Traffic will only be able to travel east-west through Maryland Avenue. There will be no access to Jackson Street north or south from Maryland Avenue. To access Old Maryland Avenue and businesses, please use Maryland Avenue.  
    • Pavement removals will begin.  
    • Work on the underground utilities will begin.  
    • Crews will begin working on removal and installation of storm sewer.  
  • Maryland Avenue to Norpac Road 
    • July 13, Jackson Street from the north side of Maryland Avenue intersection to Norpac Road is scheduled to be closed.  
    • Crews will begin moving utilities to prepare for road construction to begin.  
    • Demolition of the south bridge over the railroad will occur.  

August 

  • Maryland Avenue Intersection  
    • Crews will work on grading the intersection in preparation for curb and roadway paving.  
    • Crews will pour curb and gutter.  
    • Paving of the roadway will occur.  
    • Crews will pour concrete sidewalks and pedestrian ramps.  
  • Maryland Avenue to Norpac Road 
    • Crews will remove existing pavement.  
    • Removal and installation of watermain and storm and sanitary sewers will begin. 

September  

  • Maryland Avenue Intersection  
    • Traffic will shift from the north side of the intersection to the south side of the intersection. Traffic will be able to access Jackson Street south of Maryland Avenue.  
    • Crews will begin pavement removals.  
    • Removal and installation of watermain and storm and sanitary sewers will occur.  
    • Crews will pour curb.  
    • Crews will pave the base layers of the roadway.  
    • Crews will pour the concrete sidewalk.  
  • Maryland Avenue to Norpac Road 
    • Installation of watermain and storm and sanitary sewers continues.  
    • Crews will construct the underground filtration system.  
    • Crews will prepare the roadway for curb and roadway paving.  

Traffic Impacts  

  • July 13, weather permitting, Jackson Street will be closed from the north side of the Maryland Avenue intersection to Norpac Road.  
  • Please follow posted detours and use Old Maryland Avenue to access businesses at Jackson Street and Old Maryland Avenue.
